Have you ever wanted to find out the maximum amount of RAM your Mac can have? Maybe you want to find out the maximum operating system that your computer can upgrade to. Mactracker is an app that offers all that information and more.
Mactracker offers tons of information on Apple’s current products along with computers dating back all the way to the original Apple I. Here are some of the things that most people will find useful in Mactracker:
Maximum OS (Operating System)
Once you select a model of Mac, you can double click the model to open it up. If you click on the Software tab, you will notice that it will show the original operating system that came with the computer. Maximum OS shows what the maximum operating system can be installed on it. In the case of this screenshot, it shows that the 20-inch 2007 iMac can have the latest release of OS X. At the time of this article being written, that would be OS X 10.11 El Capitan.
RAM
If you are looking to upgrade the RAM in your computer, you may be curious to find out what type you should buy, and how much your Mac can handle. Once you select the model of computer you are looking for, just select the Memory and Graphics tab. This will show you the maximum memory that your Mac can handle. For example, in the screenshot the Late 2012 Mac mini’s maximum memory is 16 GB. In the Memory Slots section, it will show you the speed and type of memory (e.g. 1600 MHz speed, 204-pin DDR3 SO-DIMM).
This Mac
In the side menu bar of the Mactracker Mac app, there is an option titled This Mac. That allows Mactracker to automatically look at your computer and find it in the available list. This feature can save time trying to figure out the model of the your exact computer.
Accessories
Not only does Mactracker offer information about Macs, iPads, iPhones, and other devices. It also offers information on accessories such as the Magic Mouse and Apple Remote.
Other Information
Other information Mactracker offers includes connection speeds such as USB, Thunderbolt, and FireWire. Power information includes the system battery, maximum battery cycles, and proper type of power adapter for your device. This can come in handy if you need to replace your power adapter. Processor information is also available, with details including the processor type and speeds that are available on different models.
