What's the Difference Between the AirPort Express, Extreme and Time Capsule?

What's the Difference Between the AirPort Express, Extreme and Time Capsule?Apple provides three options for WiFi routers, all with different features that make each of them useful in different ways. So, which one should you buy? Let’s take a look at all of their features in order to help you decide which Apple WiFi router will be best for you.

AirPort Express

First, lets talk about the features of the AirPort Express. This router is the perfect router for an apartment, small home or dorm room. It broadcasts the wireless signal from its dual-band 802.11n antenna at frequencies of 2.4GHz and 5GHz at the same time. It is also the only AirPort that can make any speaker play music from your other Apple Device (iPad, iPhone, Mac or iPod touch) through AirPlay. Just plug in a speaker using an audio cable and you will be able to play music from your iOS devices or from your iTunes library on your computer. Another feature of the AirPort Express is the USB port on the back, which allows you to plug in a USB printer and print wirelessly from any computer connected to the AirPort’s network. Lastly, the AirPort Express can be used to extend your existing wireless network by rebroadcasting the signal it receives to boost your WiFi connection in areas of your house where your signal might not be so great.

AirPort Extreme

Next is the AirPort Extreme. The first thing you will notice compared to the AirPort Express is the size difference, as it is much taller than the Express. This increased size is actually in order to accommodate the new 802.11ac antenna. This antenna makes the Extreme up to 3X faster than the Express, making everything that you do on the Internet faster. The antenna will also give you greater reception in areas where the Express wouldn’t be able to reach. The Extreme also has both dual-band antennas broadcasting at 2.4 and 5GHz. Just like the AirPort Express, the AirPort Extreme has a USB port on the back to accommodate a printer. One feature that's different than the Express is that the Extreme can also take your USB external hard drive and make it accessible on the network via the USB port. This makes sharing and storing files much easier between multiple computers.

AirPort Time Capsule

Last, but not least, is the AirPort Time Capsule. It is the same size as the AirPort Extreme and it can do all of the same things as the AirPort Extreme, except it has a 2TB or 3TB hard drive built into it. This internal hard drive allows you to wirelessly backup your devices as well as using the hard drive for regular networked storage. This AirPort along with the Macintosh-only application, Time Machine, will wirelessly back up your computer automatically with ease. It also has the same 802.11ac antenna for the 3X speed, dual-band antennas and USB port for connecting a printer or additional external hard drive. The AirPort Time Capsule comes in two storage sizes - 2TB and 3TB.
