Over the past few months, many users have reported seeing “stains” on their Retina display MacBook Pro’s. Sometimes, the display’s anti-reflective coating could wear off or delaminate in spots - causing a visible discoloration. When Apple initially refused to repair the displays for free, citing the fact that “cosmetic damage” is not supported, a change.org petition was created along with a website called staingate.org, begging Apple to fix the issue.
Just a few days ago, Apple launched a program to replace these affected displays free of charge. Apple has yet to announce the program publicly, but some customers have reported Apple is proactively contacting customers who have inquired about the issue in the past.
How Does the Stained Display Replacement Work?
Apple will replace the Retina Display free of charge on affected MacBooks and MacBook Pros within three years of the original purchase date, or within one year of October 16th 2015 - whichever is longer. Simply visit any Apple retail store or authorized service provider (like CityMac) for assistance.
It is unclear what causes the delamination. Some suggest it could be the use of unauthorized cleaners on the display, others say it’s caused by the keyboard and trackpad rubbing on the lid while closed. For some, it occurs in the middle of the display. Others see it around the edges of the display.
Other Apple Replacement Programs
This is not the first time Apple has issued a recall or offered an additional warranty for problems affecting a large number of users. Recently, they launched a program to replace the iSight Camera on iPhone 6 Plus. They’ve also released a replacement program for the Battery and Sleep/Wake Button on iPhone 5, graphics card replacement for certain 15" and 17" MacBook Pros, as well as a complete recall on Beats Pill XL due to a fire hazard.
