Instagram Launches Higher Quality Photo Sharing

Instagram, the world’s most popular mobile photo-sharing network, just announced via their cofounder’s Twitter that it’s rolling out high-quality 1080x1080 uploads on iOS and Android. This is a huge increase from the previous 640 x 640 resolution.

Instagram has seen enormous growth and success over the last few years, but the low photo quality has been a constant complaint from users. Instagram has made a lot of changes recently, from being acquired by Facebook to new editing tools to hashtag exploration enhancements.

The company itself has not issued an official statement on the issue, less their cofounder’s tweet, and there’s no word on whether or not the quality enhancements will apply to videos as well.

Hopefully the update will include an option to view the higher quality photos in the lower resolution when not on WiFi, to conserve cellular data. 1080x1080 photos have almost 3x as many pixels as 640x640 photos and would require more cellular data to view on mobile devices.

Since no iOS update release notes have indicated the change, it’s likely just a backend update that will be introduced to users over time. Soon you’ll be able to see your selfies in full-resolution!
