Apple Announces New Music Memos App

A new Apple-designed app called Music Memos has appeared in the app store Wednesday morning. Inspired by the built-in Voice Memos app, it allows musicians to record song ideas.

The app starts with a simple blue dot in the center of the screen, allowing you to tap to start recording. There’s also an Auto option in the top left corner that will automatically start recording when it detects music.

Once you’ve recorded your song, the app will analyze the recording - whether it’s vocals, a guitar, or anything else - for their chords and tempo. It will then automatically add chord names and gives you the option to add bass or drums to your mix. There’s even a built in tuner to make sure your pitches are perfect.

You can name and add tags to each recording, such as Chords, Chorus, Mellow, Riff, Upbeat, Verse, Vocal Melody, or whatever you’d like. You can also trim the recording, correct the automatically detected key/tempo/chord names, jot down lyrics/capo/tuning, rate the recording 1-5 stars, and share the recording with Garageband or other apps. Everything is synced with iCloud so your ideas are safely stored away.

This app will be fantastic for songwriters who often use Voice Memos to record their ideas and turn them into full-fledged songs. Music Memos is available for free in the app store.
