App Review: Sky Guide

The sky has an outstanding high number of stars in it. Star gazing is fun, but it is even more enjoyable to know what you are looking at in the sky. Sky Guide, an app on iOS, does just that. Along with being one of the most popular paid iOS apps of all-time, Sky Guide allows you to use your iOS device to see star designs, names and information.

Designs in the Sky

When looking at the stars in Sky Guide, the app shows designs that are made out of the stars. This is very helpful and saves time from trying to search the Internet for certain star designs. Most star and constellation names were formed around images of animals and gods. Sky Guide helps you perceive the stars and constellations as their names depict. For example, if you hold your iPhone up to the constellation of Cancer, Sky Guide will point out the individual stars that make up the constellation as well as show an underlaying image of a crab. This helps you become more intimately acquainted and informed with the stars in the night sky.

App Design

Sky Guide’s overall design is very clean and to the point. The app buttons are located in the screen corners, enabling the starts in the sky to take up the majority of the screen real estate. The user interface is simple and easy to use, which is great. The main feature of the app allows the user to hold their device up to the sky and have Sky Guide highlight and indicate the stars and constellations that appear on screen. It all works via GPS, so you can use Sky Guide even on a cloudy night.

Customizing Sky Guide

Sky Guide Preferences

In the Preferences menu, there are different options that allow you to select what all is visible when using Sky Guide. For example, there is an option to display satellites as they travel by, orbiting the Earth. There is another option to turn Sky Guide's music and sounds off, enabling you to listen to your favorite music while exploring the starts. The large amount of effort that must have been put into the development of Sky Guide is noticeable. It is an incredibly detailed, polished and entertaining app that is as educational as it is fun to use.
