Verizon Introduces New Plans, Eliminates 2-Year Contracts

Verizon's New Plans

Verizon Wireless announced a brand new set of service plans in four sizes: Small, Medium, Large and X-Large. Each plan comes with unlimited talk and text and shareable data, much like the current MORE Everything plans. The new plan is simply dubbed "The Verizon Plan" and the pricing structure is as follows:

  • Small: $30/month for 1GB of shareable data
  • Medium: $45/month for 3GB of shareable data
  • Large: $60/month for 6GB of shareable data
  • X-Large: $80/month for 12GB of shareable data

Access Fees on the Verizon Plan

Once you select a data package, each iPhone (or any smartphone) is just $20/month and iPads and Jetpacks are $10/month. Customers can pay the full retail price for their device, or finance it through Verizon’s 0% interest device payment option (formerly Verizon EDGE).

Pricing Breakdown

For example, let’s look at John and Jane. They have two iPhone 5’s and an iPad 4 (16GB Cellular model) to trade-in for two iPhone 6’s (16GB) and a cellular iPad Air 2, all with AppleCare. Here’s how their pricing would break down:

Per Month

  • Plan: $45 for 3GB of shareable data (1GB per Device)
  • Line Access: $50 ($20 per iPhone + $10 per iPad)
  • iPhone Device Payment: $54.08 ($27.04 a month per iPhone)
    • Total: $149.08

At Time of Purchase

  • iPhone Sales Tax (at 9.5%): $123.32 ($61.66 per iPhone)
  • iPad Air 2: $629 + Tax
  • Applecare: $297 ($99 / Device)
  • Verizon iPad Activation Discount: -$100
  • iPad 4 Trade-In: -$145
  • iPhone Trade-Ins: -$400 ($199 per iPhone)
    • Total: $404.32

Other Changes with the New Verizon Plan

The new plans are much more straightforward and it’s easy to change your plan “size” on the fly with the MyVerizon app. Verizon is also making billing easier to understand, with a simpler and more streamlined bill. Verizon is also completely removing the two-year contract business model for new customers; rather, you get an upgrade as soon as your device has been paid off.

All these changes won’t go into effect until August 13th, 2015. Current customers will have the option to change their plan to the new structure or keep their existing plan with some restrictions.
